2008: The Year in Review
2008 was marked as a turning point for me. In 2007 I was more or less the solo-hiker. The paranoid solo-hiker. But this year, I’ve met a lot of hikers who are even more enthusiastic for hiking than me.
The trails beginning this year started off easy enough. The usual Dawn Mine to Echo Mountain, or a trek up to Inspiration Point would be the norm for me. But slowly, the hikes started taking on a whole different meaning. All of a sudden I found myself doing class 3 rock climbs, hiking tall peaks, and doing one of the hardest hikes in the San Gabriels.
That’s pretty much what 2008 has become for me. An increasing fitness level translates into an increase in difficulty. To quote Daft Punk, “work it harder, make it better, do it faster, makes us stronger.”
Here’s a quick rundown of my 2008 accomplishments:
> Strawberry Peak
> Mt. Baldy – From Bear Flats, Register Ridge*, and Ski Hut trail
> Mt. Yale
> Cucamonga Peak
> Iron Mountain*
> Rattlesnake Peak
> Williamson and Thrall Peak via Pleasant View Ridge*
> Fox Mountain & Condor Peak
> Twin Peaks
Also, along the way, I’ve met a lot of incredible people which makes these almost weekly excursions so much better. There’s plenty more to explore and many many more friends to make. I’m really looking forward to 2009!
